No, does not clunk in 5th and no other gears clunk either I would remove both and test it. It will be noisy, but you can also see what is happening, if the transmission is moving around etc. If a transmission mount is sloppy, the transmission can move around and all you see is the gear stick jumping out of gear. The console is blocking your view of what is really happening. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/57424-280z-5th-gear-synchros-gone-bad/?page=2#findComment-517227 Share on other sites

siteunseen Posted April 4, 2017 Share #15 Posted April 4, 2017 Here's that thread of mine http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/55457-5-speed-tranny-any-ideas/ The boots can hinder the shifter for sure. 8^) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/57424-280z-5th-gear-synchros-gone-bad/?page=2#findComment-517237 Share on other sites

I'm guessing that one provides some volume inside the outer shift boot so that the outer boot doesn't interfere with the shifter... siteunseen Posted April 4, 2017 Share #17 Posted April 4, 2017 (edited) I think it's to keep cigarette butts, earrings and roaches out of the cup the shift rod goes in. Oh yeah, exhaust smell too. FunkytownZ Posted April 4, 2017 Author Share #19 Posted April 4, 2017 So I took all the boots off and everything and it shifted into 5th the first try around 55 mph. Tried it again 4 times after that and it popped back - some more violent than others.I notice the left side of the shift area is smooth, but anything to the right (5th and reverse) you have to force the shifter to the right a little bit and after it pops its smooth Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/57424-280z-5th-gear-synchros-gone-bad/?page=2#findComment-517249 Share on other sites
FunkytownZ Posted April 4, 2017 Author Share #20 Posted April 4, 2017 This rubber at the bottom of the shifter is throwing me off... the left side (driver side) doesn't interfere with the C-housing but the right side does Also, is the gold cotter pin forward of the shifter suppose to move when you move the shifter?Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/57424-280z-5th-gear-synchros-gone-bad/?page=2#findComment-517251 Share on other sites
siteunseen Posted April 4, 2017 Share #21 Posted April 4, 2017 What does the shift rod show? There's your biggest clue IMHO. You have a C clip to pop off, push the pin through to remove the shifter. siteunseen Posted April 4, 2017 Share #23 Posted April 4, 2017 Looks like cuts on that hose over the shifter. Cut that off I'd think. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/57424-280z-5th-gear-synchros-gone-bad/?page=2#findComment-517254 Share on other sites
siteunseen Posted April 4, 2017 Share #24 Posted April 4, 2017 That hose is not supposed to be over your shift rod. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/57424-280z-5th-gear-synchros-gone-bad/?page=2#findComment-517255 Share on other sites
