Early fuel/gas cap and mounting ring differences

I have two spare fuel cap and trim ring assemblies.  One had the provision for the retainer chain, as seen in the eyelets of the Fuel Cap #1.jpg photo.  The other assembly does not have the provision for the chain.

Does anyone know what production period these assemblies were originally installed?

My early '72, built in '71, has the chain as well.

My early 71 (mfg 12/70) has the chain and my 73 had the chain.

Interesting discussion. The style of cap you show, chain'ed or not, was very early. Non-vented I believe.  Likely the under VIN = 20000 cars. 

What I want to know, now very hard to tell, did these early caps with no chain also not have the rubber flap that was designed to protect the body while the chained cap was dangling while open? I love baseless conjecture, I can you tell?

Baseless or not, mine has the rubber flap. Apparently there were different styles of flap for the early cars.

I am still seeking guidance on Model Year or Production Timeframe the chain feature was added to the early style cap.

 vin#5305 6/70 has a chain.  It looks just like the one on the left in your photo.

Hi, my 01/70 Z432 has a non - chain cap. 03/70 240Z has a chain .

Ah...Here you go.  17251-E4101 is the original filler cap superseded without date by 17251-E4102 (with chain).  The filler neck 17212-E4101 changed to E4102 with it, but again, no date listed in the parts book.  The rubber flap, 78818-E4100 is the only listing.  My cars have the flap.  I still have a brand new one that I bought in 2013.  It is labeled E4100.
