siteunseen Posted February 24, 2019 Share #121 Posted February 24, 2019 It's an alternate spelling. Baulky/ balky, refusing to go. I've always heard about horses and cows being balky. Maybe a girl or two. Here you go... balk·y Dictionary result for balky /ˈbôkē/ adjective US adjective: baulky reluctant; uncooperative. "he was trying to get his balky horse to move" Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569249 Share on other sites
Mark Maras Posted February 24, 2019 Share #122 Posted February 24, 2019 Collins English Dictionary, A balk ring (synchro) is a rotating part of a gearbox that prevents the gears from engaging too early. Namerow Posted February 24, 2019 Share #123 Posted February 24, 2019 For added obfuscation, look up the 'balk' in the baseball rulebook. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569252 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted February 24, 2019 Author Share #124 Posted February 24, 2019 At least we are communicating ? As my computers get smarter , my spelling gets worse! I have looked in the case but find it hard to tell how worn the parts are. I was running Redline MT90 in it. $62 a gallon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569253 Share on other sites

The easiest items to assess are the brass synchro (balk) rings. The teeth should be sharp, wedge-shaped. Usually, the second gear teeth are rounded. Third gear, a little better. Fourth, better yet. There should be measurements in the FSM to assess the amount of wear using a feeler gauge. Got to thinking about our definition of baulk. Does it grind (snck) a bit going into second if one shifts it too fast or is it just plain difficult to get it into second? It just resists going into the gear. Same when shifting down. All the other gears were pretty smooth. I assume this is from being driven hard 1st -2nd. Less so in 3rd gear. The car was running terrible bad during the test so it wasn't very comprehensive Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569309 Share on other sites
zKars Posted February 25, 2019 Share #128 Posted February 25, 2019 The clutch may not be releasing completely if its hard to shift in all gears. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569310 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted February 25, 2019 Author Share #129 Posted February 25, 2019 I hate to add another large section to getting the car back on the road right now. I spent all weekend stripping the car. It goes to "paint jail" in a week. Presumably for 3 months or so. We'll see on that. I plan on trying to talk him into getting the hardware plated while the car is apart. I plan on exploring a professional plater in the area. I am still a little unsure about my DIY plating. Some of it seems to be very corrosion resistant others seem to fade early. We also have to go through all the hydraulics, wiring harness, heater system and other sundries Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569311 Share on other sites

That is possible but the clutch lever had alot of actuation when viewed directly at the transmission Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569312 Share on other sites
Mark Maras Posted February 25, 2019 Share #131 Posted February 25, 2019 Were any of the brass synchro ring teeth from one gear (2nd) worn more than another? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/59089-codys-goon/?page=11#findComment-569314 Share on other sites
