On my 280 I never added any gasket sealer to my intake / exhaust gaskets. IIRC I have done it twice over the past 30 years with no problem.

I'm sure others will chime in on what they did. I'm not near one but what does the FSM say?

In the "How to restore your Datsun" by Tom Monroe page 138 bottom of page it states "No" sealer is required.

So, if you have "imperfect" surfaces, as Mark Maras mentioned above, then you could use a sealer. I guess it all depends on that, imperfect surfaces.

As a matter of fact I recall a friend of mine, many years ago, doubling up on his gasket for the fear of the imperfect surface issue. Used 2 fiber type from MSA.

If I were you I would check those surfaces with a straight edge first if you have not. Then decide from there where to go.

I'm about ready to install a new gasket on my intake/exhaust manifolds and I'm looking for some opinions about the use/need for some kind of high temp gasket sealer.

What brand of gasket?  Might be more important.  Did you have the exhaust manifold resurfaced?  They tend to corrode if they were leaking before.

A good gasket and smooth, flat, clean surfaces will save you a lot of redo time.

I've used  Copper Coat Gasket Compound over the years. CRC and Permatex are two brands that I've used. Good stuff, especially on old imperfect surfaces.

+1 on copper coat,  have used it also for many years.  Used it when I redid my in/ex gasket 5 years ago.  Used a Nissan gasket.

When my 240z was 37.. i only used a nissan gasket.. no sealers..  Personally i would not recomend any sealer there.. it gets very hot.. an extra resurfaced in/outlet side is recommended.  But as zedhead says, a good gasket is important.. there are more threads with this question.. what's the best gasket?

Mart

I also used that E4610 if i remember correctly..  (in 2007... it's still in there today.. doing what it's supposed to do haha..) My car was running with just the one problem that all seals were bad.. so i bought a complete set for the L24 from Nissan.
