chiefmd Posted October 5, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2018 In the process of rebuilding my 77 280z. Pulled the tank and cleaned out the rust. I am not going to be reinstalling it until at least next year so I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions as to how to store so that it won't rust again. Zed Head Posted October 5, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2018 I use something like this in my spare engine. Seems like it might work in a tank. https://www.walmart.com/ip/STA-BIL-22001-Fogging-Oil-for-Engine-Storage-Protection-Against-Rust-and-Corrosion-12-fl-oz/32926613?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=1784&adid=22222222227000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=42423897272&wl4=pla-51320962143&wl5=9032982&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=32926613&wl13=1784&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImd21p5ru3QIVhdlkCh0rPwgsEAQYASABEgLkWPD_BwE Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558905 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted October 5, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 5, 2018 I would use tank sealing product. There are several to choose from: POR15, Red Kote, Caswell, Eastwood tank sealer Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558915 Share on other sites
Captain Obvious Posted October 5, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 5, 2018 I take the tank off my motorcycle every year for winter storage. Drain it completely and then (on a nice sunny dry fall day), let it outside in the sun to dry for the day. Once it's completely dry inside, I put it in the basement where there is a dehumidifier. Doesn't rust if you keep the humidity low with the dehumidifier. SteveJ Posted October 5, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 5, 2018 My first thought was the same as Zed Head's. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558930 Share on other sites
Dave WM Posted October 5, 2018 Share #6 Posted October 5, 2018 when I was in college I would drive my RM250 up a flight of stairs, park it under a raised up bunk bed in the dorm, and pull the fuel tank and put it on the outside window ledge... 2 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558932 Share on other sites

That's a great story! Before going on vacation I wanted to put my KX80 inside my Mom's upstairs apartment. Never considered the perpendicular railing that met me at the top. One of the dumbest things I've done so far. I was 13 then and close to 50 now so I'm sure they'll be more to come. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558938 Share on other sites

Wait!! I knew you looked familiar!! You're D-Day, right? chiefmd Posted October 6, 2018 Author Share #10 Posted October 6, 2018 Ok. After doing some more research and reading I think the suggestion to use POR 15 is the winner. I have cleaned out the tank with Evaporust and its is really clean. I was wondering if I need to use POR 15's complete kit, marine cleaner, metal and sealer or can I just add the sealer? Thanks for all the input. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558994 Share on other sites
Zed Head Posted October 6, 2018 Share #11 Posted October 6, 2018 Seems like solving a problem that doesn't exist. Tank sealants are designed to seal holes, and they come with their own risks, like clogged ports, failed drying/curing, etc. You have a nice clean tank apparently. On the other hand, if you're just looking for another project, why not? I'd hang some silica gel inside and seal it. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Dry-Packs-40-g-Silica-Gel-Dehumidifier-DP40CAN/303044548?cm_mmc=|THD|&mid=sxTI6Qz12|dc_mtid_890389n25185_pcrid_247839744665_pkw__pmt__product_303044548_slid_&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3aDvwKvy3QIVGNRkCh1EgAYVEAQYASABEgKdo_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJT578Wr8t0CFdILrQYd54gIlg Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/60869-storing-emrty-fuel-tank/#findComment-558995 Share on other sites
chiefmd Posted October 6, 2018 Author Share #12 Posted October 6, 2018 WOW.... Zhead I never thought of that. That could be my answer. I think I should try that for a couple of weeks and see what it yields. Thanks for thinking outside the box.
