I bought a phone a couple of days ago.  Wow!  I've been flogged with crap associated with that purchase.

Like you said earlier Zed, no longer the information super highway but the commercial super highway.  Except classiczcars.com.

Just exploring the internet.  Looks like the Skimwords link is to ebay.  Shows up at lower left.  Kind of handy if you shop eBay I guess.

Zed,

My clients would bring me machines like this, most of the time this software is caused by some type of adware, for Macintosh we had to clean some files out to get rid of the software. I'm sure the same would be on Windows if that's the operating system you are using.

Typically this software feeds advertisements/harvests your data in order to sell it to some shady company, who probably sells it down the stream.

I don't see skimwords links when I'm using my computer, I tried it on Safari, and Firefox with uBlock Origin (off and on)

Anyway,

Are you using Google Chrome? If you switch into something like Firefox does the issue persist there?

Sometimes it can be an "extension" installed for the browser, which can be managed from the settings menu, here's an example.

I don't t think this is something that Mike added to the server on the backend......

You can add something like https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock#installation to block adverts online, but make sure to "allow classiczcars"  or subscribe ?

Thanks rama, it's on Firefox also, in the same words.  I use Chrome on Windows 7.  No separate adblockers installed, Chrome has its own incorporated in to the program.  Which is weird because Chrome is a Google browser and Adsense is a Google program.  I'd try it on IE to compare there but I uninstalled IE quite a while ago.  Amazing how worthless a Microsoft program can be, Internet Explorer.

I think Skimword might be a server thing, or connected to Google Adsense.   Maybe Mike didn't add it, it just sneaked in.  It's not a big deal, just another puzzle to work on.

The ads at the top of the page are amusing, mainly because they have nothing to do with anything that I would do or view on the internet.  They are completely disconnected from my world, generally.  Maybe they're trying to persuade me to try new things.

door panel door panels fuel rail,  Twin Turbo, Gas tank, master cylinder caliper   just a test.

fuel rail is linked in a recent post and master cylinder was in mine.  But not here.  Don't know how that thing works.

@Zed Head

It's site-wide, ublock-origin was auto-blocking it as advertising, see "skimresource.com" in the bottom of the list, most likely something that's on the backend of the site, perhaps @Mike needs more donations to keep the site running........

on the plus side, its nothing wrong with your computer, consider using ublock origin, it really cleans up the web.

Yeah, Google own the content, the software and servers pushing it, and viewers that most are using, the OS, and often the hardware people use.  They have cornered control of all. It is like the foundations in any scary Scifi film where a world is controlled by a computer.  The Internet is dead.

Thanks for looking it up.  Interesting stuff.  Fewer words got skimmed this time.

Doesn't seem to hurt anything.  I might start using it to do eBay searches.  Struts.....shocks....gas tank...if I knew how it picked its skim words. Edit - nice, eBay got skimmed and it took me right to eBay when I clicked it.  Fewer keystrokes!  yay
