Hi all,

Today I launched a new classified ads system on the site.  This new system integrates with your profile and gives everyone the capability to sell items on our site.  It's a bit different than posting a regular forum message, so, I would appreciate your feedback.  The best thing about the new classifieds is the capability to self-manage and set expiration dates.  The entire system is database driven and gives our members extra features that were not available when we were using the forums.  Take a look at the new system and let me know what you think..  https://www.classiczcars.com/classifieds

The one question I have is, do you think we should automatically create a forum topic when an ad is posted?  Or, should we leave all of the conversations about these ads within the new module?

Thanks for your support!  This is the kind of improvement we can make to the site with our supporting member subscriptions.

Best,

Mike

  • @jfa.series1, I was able to find the user store option.  Each user has to enable it manually.   You can do this by clicking your name in the upper right of the header.  Click on profile, then edit pro

  • Great glad you guys were able to get this working.  Please note that I realize there is an issue with thumbnails right now, I'll have it fixed by tomorrow.  It shouldn't affect the functionality.

I like@Patcon usually only check the unread section. Love the new classified section.
I like the idea to leave all the comments in the classified module. Nice work.

72 body and block, everything else 71, Tokico springs, Illumina, R180 CLSD, 83 close ratio, 3.90 gears, Ztherapy SUs, BRE 15X7 Libre wheels and BRE front spoiler.

As a hobbyist, I prefer the forum approach to promote my refurbished parts.  it gives me a chance to get my parts visibility in the general discussion that they might not get in a separate classified area.

Thanks guys..  for now I'll leave the forum topic so the classifieds have more exposure.  My biggest reason for going to a classifieds "system" like this is due to the expiration and renewal feature.  The raw forum approach for selling isn't the greatest because the ads stay forever and they aren't removed automatically when expired or sold.  Here are some more features included in the new software:

  • Unlimited categories of adverts, plus unlimited depth of parent-child relationships with a lot of settings
  • Per-category permissions to show category, view adverts, submit adverts, ask questions and review adverts
  • Category Icons
  • Ability to choose the order and which blocks to display on the app index: Expiring Soon, What's New and Categories block
  • Support Extra Fields so you can define different fields per category
  • Advert History (advert view): works like the Moderation History, but will log all actions related to the advert itself, like who changed the expiration date, who set the advert as complete, etc.
  • Ability to post external advert link: you can link an advert posted in other sites, like eBay, etc.
  • Ability to hide adverts when expired and/or completed from category view
  • Ability do add a default address for new adverts in Account Settings
  • Central area where advertiser can view all expired adverts and renew them at anytime, if the package allows renewal
  • Users can make offers (bid) to the adverts, if the advertiser allows
  • Advertiser can reject offers
  • Ability to take specific actions when a member is deleted or flagged as a spammer
  • Ability to remove the upload of attachments in the advert description editor
  • Submit questions and reviews to advert
  • Search integration: search adverts along with the rest of your community’s content
  • Supports item marking, allowing members to see what adverts have been added or commented/reviewed on
  • Integrates into Activity Streams
  • Integrates to Share Links to share
  • Integrates to Google Maps if and address is provided in the link submission
  • Integration to Member Filters (Bulk Mail, etc.)
  • Supports the built-in tagging system including prefixes
  • Support for notifications such as new adverts and questions comments on adverts
  • Ability to follow/like categories and individual adverts
  • Ability to add adverts to a wish list
  • Ability to view RSS feeds of all adverts
  • Friendly URLs for adverts and categories
  • Reactions support
  • Content Message and Promote features
  • Recommended Questions
  • Added REACTIONS to the questions
  • Member Store
  • Activity stream support
  • Change advert type once posted
  • Dates on expired ads
  • Integration to Gallery

Holy Classifieds, Mike - 36 reasons to switch!!! :wow:  I think I get the message.

I just put a new one up in the forum, but I'll go ahead and try out the classified to see how it works.

OK - got it in the classifieds and it immediately popped up the forum so that concern goes away.  You can delete my post in the forum "For Sale" if you want.

When I set up the classified ad it wanted a year (0 is OK)  and model (required), that would be OK for a vehicle, should not be required for Parts.

Otherwise, it looks good.

Thanks

Is there an option to "allow comments" by the OP? I have found that if a seller has posted parts for sale and by mistake (either intentional or UN-knowledgeable) other members can chime in and give advice.

By default, the advertisement should be allow comments unless the poster chooses otherwise.... my $0.02 that isn't worth a penny.

Thanks for the feedback, Jim!  I just removed the model and VIN requirement for the parts section.  Do you have any other options I should add to it?  Maybe compatible models or maybe that's too much...

BTW, the new classifieds system has storefront option that I can make available for people who restore parts in their spare time (like you).  I'll see what I can do to get that set up and working.

No other options that come to mind altho I set up the ad pretty quick and did not give a lot of study to it. Yes, I think compatibility would be a bit much, leave that up to a buyer;s responsibility.  The seller should be responsible for an accurate description and application of a part.  I'll look for something else ready for sale and get another ad set-up, see if there might be other tweaks that might be made.

I'd like to work with you on a storefront, looks like a pretty cool alternative.  We'd have to watch that storefront content additions (due to potential volume) do not automatically post to the discussion forum lest they become a nuisance - unless you have a creative idea to avoid that potential problem..

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks Jim @jfa.series1, I'll leave the required details out of the parts area until something else comes up.  As far as the storefront, I'm currently looking into it and will update as soon as I know more about how it works.

Oops?   @Mike

Thanks @Zed Head, I just replied to the bug report.  I can add the drop downs to the specific areas, I didn't think anyone would miss them.  Apparently I was wrong.  ?

@jfa.series1, I was able to find the user store option.  Each user has to enable it manually.   You can do this by clicking your name in the upper right of the header.  Click on profile, then edit profile.  You'll see another tab for enabling your store in there.  Enable it and give your store a name.  I tested this with my own store and it seems to work great.  The cool thing is all of your items for sale will be listed in a single place.  This is great for the hobbyists on our site or people who want to part out an entire car with multiple items.
