Same thing as Fuel injection does, only less accurately. They meter fuel and atomize the fuel into the air that is coming into the engine (creating an explosive air/fuel mixture) to be burned to create the power of the engine.

HHhahahahaha get yourself a book I would have asked the samething 6 months ago. You need to get your shop manual and read read read. After having to work on my car as much as I do I learned quick. By the way the carbs. mix the gas and air to a specific ratio then it sends this mixture through the intake into the multiple cylinders. Here the air and gas mixture along with the spark from you spark plug causes an explosion which you wouldn't have with out oxygen from the air, gas, and spark. Keep wrenchin away................

No, the caburetor is that Rube Goldberg looking metal thing sitting on top or hanging off the side of the engine that requires infinite tinkering and patience, and nobody ever gets working perfectly. If they say they do, then they must be a ricer. Victor.
