Hi/Low Beam Indicator

In an early '71 (8/70 production date) 240Z where is the Hi/Low Beam indicator? How hard is it to replace the blub? Is there a fuse that runs only this indicator? The car failed inspection partly due to this not working and I'm figuring it is a burned out bulb.

Unless it changed between models it's a blue rectangular indicator at the very bottom of the speedometer. It shouldn't be hard to get to as long as you don't mind being upside down under the steering wheel and reaching up while your blood rushes to your head ...

CORRECTION:

The little blue indicator is at the TOP of the speedometer, just below the numbers.

The one at the bottom is a RED square for the BRAKE Indicator Lamp (Both Parking Brake Engaged and Low Fluid Warning)

Getting to the bulb is tricky but not impossible. Just worm your hand back behind the dash and access the top and center bulb. Getting the bulb out of the socket one-handed, IS another story.

The Hi/Low beam indicator does work, you just can't see it during the day! It is VERY dim as is all the dash lights.

Is this normal or is there a way to fix the dimness?

There's a rheostat knob under the dash (like the knob that resets the trip odometer but on the other side) that adjusts the brightness of all of the instrument bulbs. Yours may be turned down. On the other hand, all of your bulbs may be dim due to years of use. I wouldn't expect to see anything in daylight except for perhaps the brake warning and the hi beam indicator. The true test would be how things look at night.

Neither the High Beam Indicator nor the Brake Indicator are connected to the Dimmer Switch. Adjusting the dimmer will neither brighten nor dim those two lights. If it does, you have a problem someplace as they are not part of the circuit controlled by the dimmer.

That makes sense since you could accidentally turn them completely off.

I wouldn't expece that to be the case. That part of my post was about the other dash lights, they are all rather dim.
