I ran across a decent (still needs work) front fender from a 78 280Z.  I would be using it on a 73 240.  How well will it fit or will I have to do a lot of modifications to it?

I've never done it but I live a lot of my Z life through the internet.  This parts web site suggests that they're exactly the same and/or certainly interchangeable.  Click around to make sure I didn't misunderstand it.  Start from the beginning and see if you end up in the same place.

I agree. I believe they are interchangeable although the 280z fender may have mounting points for the fender liner that the earlier cars don't have (UIM)

Also agree, it has always been my understanding that things like fenders, hoods, hatches, etc. are all interchangeable on the S30 (1970-1978).

I have used 280Z fenders, doors, hatch and hood on my 71 240Z race car. All parts interchange seamlessly. The 280Z doors have a different window channel but it will work on a 240Z. The doors also have  a side impact beam, that doesn’t impact use on the earlier Z, but I cut them out to save weight.

The emblem holes will be different, and as mentioned, maybe some extra tabs for the fender liners. 

There's two kinds of 280Z doors, 75/76 and 77/78. 75/76 are pretty similar to 240z doors, but I think there may be some slight differences in mounts for the arm rests (not sure, never checked), and of course the door beams. 77/78 doors are completely different, and while they may bolt up, the shape of the door jamb in 77/78 cars is different, and IIRC even the latches are different. I wouldn't bother with them if you have an earlier car.
