Patcon Posted April 7, 2023 Author Share #49 Posted April 7, 2023 @SteveJ Where did you find that at Rockauto. Part#? I haven't been able to find it. The Airtex had the cast impeller... Patcon Posted April 16, 2023 Author Share #51 Posted April 16, 2023 We made a little more progress on the motor today Unfortunately we got stumped today! We started working on the flywheel and pressure plate. The rotating assembly all got balanced including the pressure plate. Unfortunately the machine shop didn't put the dowels in the flywheel before balancing. They must have just bolted the pressure plate up to the flywheel without the dowels. They assumed that the pressure plate could be mounted any of three ways, 120 degrees apart. That is not the case!!! Once the dowels are in there is only one way it will mount up and it's not the way they balanced it. So I'll go by and see what they say. Hopefully it's an easy fix. We'll see... Really disappointing... In their defense I didn't know that either 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-652579 Share on other sites
Mark Maras Posted April 16, 2023 Share #52 Posted April 16, 2023 Hopefully they aligned the dowel pin holes in both parts. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-652582 Share on other sites

The marks he made on the flywheel and the pressure plate for where to install them balanced are off by 120 degrees. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-652585 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted April 28, 2023 Author Share #54 Posted April 28, 2023 Machine shop didn't seem concerned about the indexing. Just suggested we run it. I don't know that I have a lot of other options. They're not going to do anything about it. So I guess we'll run it and see. The only other option would be to tear it all down and find someone else to check the balance on it. Disappointing but not surprising... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-653140 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted April 28, 2023 Author Share #55 Posted April 28, 2023 On another note we have a matchbox dizzy for his car. It looked pretty pathetic, so I decided I would go through it and clean it up and make sure everything was free inside it... So I was trying to get the reluctor(?) off but was afraid to try to pry hard enough to make it move. So I came up with this. I use the center off another puller and a couple of paint can openers. Didn't need a wrench. Threaded off by hand Continued on with disassembly Pretty nasty inside So after I helped Ernest pull his motor, I made use of his Vapor honing cabinet The main body has a lot of pitting but not much I can do about that. It does look a lot better though and once it's reassembled, it aught to be reasonably presentable 4 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-653141 Share on other sites
Popular Post Patcon Posted April 28, 2023 Author Popular Post Share #56 Posted April 28, 2023 I also took his spare tire mount apart last weekend and replated and painted everything. The chain was tough to plate! I really should have done it in the barrel plater and I don't have enough amperage for a part that big. So I had to do it in sections and that made it sort of inconsistent. But like Cody said it will be up under the car I also started on the door sill tin at Ernest's 5 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-653142 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted May 6, 2023 Author Share #57 Posted May 6, 2023 Worked on the dizzy some more. Got the advance shaft disassembled and polished the shafts. It would appear the mechanical advance is going to be 13d? Disassembled this part too I took lots of pictures! There are several little details that would be easy to miss on reassembly Might work on this part some more tomorrow, we'll see... 2 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-653394 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted May 13, 2023 Author Share #58 Posted May 13, 2023 Worked on the dizzy some more I used some Ospho on the spring steel plates in the advance mechanism. It took the "blueing" off them. I might get the rest done tomorrow. We'll see. Hopefully it still works! 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-653606 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted May 13, 2023 Author Share #59 Posted May 13, 2023 Also all the rubber parts I softened with wintergreen oil have since re-solidified, which is disappointing!! 2 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/64870-l20b-codys-goon/?page=5#findComment-653607 Share on other sites

Maybe they needed something else to maintain pliability. This calls for a Google search...that didn't reveal anything. Have you considered treating with petroleum jelly or glycerin after the wintergreen oil has done its job?
