ZOVER Posted June 9, 2003 Share #1 Posted June 9, 2003 My father in law has decided to give me his 1973 240z::classic: It is a clean car, 50K miles, great body, the problem is it has not been started in 8-10 years and needs some basic work. The car is in Southern New Jersey and I live in Rhode Island. I need to find an appropriate shop to work on the car so I can drive it to Rhode Island. I have failed looking on the internet, calling local Nissan dealers and am now looking for anyone who has information. Can anyone give me some referencesThanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/6543-restoration-in-nj/ Share on other sites
ZmeFly Posted June 9, 2003 Share #2 Posted June 9, 2003 renting a trailer wouldnt cost you much at all and most everything you need to do you would be able to yourself with basic tools.concidering the car was sitting so long most of the hoses and seals are going to probably be shot, if not they wont be healthy. then there is the block itself, is it rotating freely or not. one thing you can do right now is remove the spark plugs and shoot some oil down into the pistons and let them soak, remove the valve cover and do the same with the cam and timing gear.you would also want to bleed and check all brake lines and there respective calipers and wheel cylinders, clutch master and slave if you have a 4 speed.next if the tank has fuel in it still remove the nut at the bottom of the tank and drain it. disconnect the lines from the carbs send forced air threw them making sure they are clean. pull the domes off of the carbs clean them out make sure all parts are working properly.if you took this car to a shop you would get raped!! just put it on a trailer and take it home yourselfgood luck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/6543-restoration-in-nj/#findComment-40307 Share on other sites
TKR514 Posted June 9, 2003 Share #3 Posted June 9, 2003 I agree with ZmeFly.Trailer it home & start the process of replacing the ALL hoses then fluids. Best guess would be a months work and about $500 to round up the parts & install. Leaving it with a dealer and telling them to "fix what needs fixing" is very close to giving them a blank check....I rented a rent-a-wreck and a car tailer a few years ago for about $70 for a one night run to pick up a car. Once you get it, you can work through the car and/or have Z friends over to help and make suggestions. It sounds like a GREAT deal! jmkm000 Posted June 24, 2003 Share #5 Posted June 24, 2003 Stephen...I'm in Staten Isand and just got a 72 240 this spring. I could use the names of a few reliable Z mechanics in the area as well as some info on the NJ Z Club (if you'll consider a Staten Islander). Thanks.Joe Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/6543-restoration-in-nj/#findComment-41820 Share on other sites
