Hi all,

Looks like we had an event that caused our system to go down for a few days this week.  While I am still looking into the exact cause of the issue, we should now be back in business.  I spent about 20+ hours debugging the operating system and restoring was able to bring it back online around 2pm PST 6/26.  Please accept my apologies for the downtime and I'll post more information here as soon as I know what happened.

20 hours fussing with uncooperative software and hardware.

Sheesh!

Were you at least in air conditioned comfort with plenty of snacks and energy drinks?

My poor A/C was trying to keep up... at least most of the work was at night early morning hours.  I may have drank a gallon of ice tea and water.  Just gotta appreciate those unplanned late nights.  😉

Is software crashing or is it being hacked?  Our AtlanticZ website was on a web hosting server that was hacked and it took it down.

In 2001 Chinese hackers took out our company website 360networks.

Chinese hackers took out the NRC systems in Canada and took all of the research data in 2014,....they are a horrible country causing harm to the internet.

I have a peer to peer network in the house and shop. Mostly hardwired, cat5e, with some wi-fi. We live in the sticks, and the power goes out quite a bit, mostly in the winter, but occasionally during summer.

Every time it goes out the wi-fi has trouble coming back online. I have to burp the routers and switches (power off, power on), open up a command line and fuss around with ipconfig, and, after wasting much time, I usually succeed at getting everything back up and running.

And it went out last Sunday for a couple hours.

After many hours screwing around I still haven't gotten the wi-fi repeated in the shop to connect to the network. The repeater there is only about 6 months old, so out of warranty.

It sucks my will to live.

I don't know what happened, actually.  The boot partition on the server was corrupted and I had to go through a series of steps to recover the partition.  After that our database server wouldn't start because of another socket-layer issue.  I ended up figuring it all out with the help of some pretty smart guys.  I don't see any evidence of hacking or hardware failure.  But, I'm still digging.  It may be a coincidence the server went down just after I removed the caching service (which hides the server behind another service).

As far as hacking, it's not just the Chinese.  The Russians are also very good at it.  I may end up going back to our caching service so I can block both countries all together.  I don't think we have any members in China or Russia and I don't believe Nissan sent Z-cars to either country.

As a matter of fact, I think I heard they were insulted by the insinuation.  Am I remembering that correctly?

Huh? In my country there is a (sort of) law that says, New stuff has to have at least 2 years of warranty, because people who buy this stuff expect it to work for many years!

Most consumer goods in the US have a standard 90 day warranty. Beats the standard two part guarantee, where if it breaks into two parts, both parts are still yours.
