Patcon Posted January 4, 2022 Share #49 Posted January 4, 2022 I ran epoxy primer and then shot under coater over it. My car had been blasted on a rotisserie. I would not use wax, that's just me. A correct restoration would be primer, then paint even in the wheel wells. I like the wheel wells to be blacked out. So that is part of the reason I went with under coater. I don't intend to baby the car so I wanted something a little tougher than paint. The car is 50+ years old and this installation and these materials far exceed the factory install. It won't be a problem in my lifetime and my kids will be in their 60's before they should have to worry about it, if ever. dar5052 Posted July 10, 2022 Author Share #50 Posted July 10, 2022 Been a while since I updated this post but nothing fun has been happening and with work so busy with a lot of travel, I haven’t had much time to work on the z. I finished repairing and areas with rot and welded all new patches in. Applied POR15 where required. I’m now focusing on the underside to get it ready for undercoating. Should be finishing that up in the next two weeks. I’ll then be able to throw the suspension back on and have a roller… and yes, that is some fine engineering since I don’t have a rotisserie. 2 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/66062-new-to-me-280z/?page=5#findComment-642270 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted July 10, 2022 Share #51 Posted July 10, 2022 Just be careful! The bare chassis is not super heavy but it's still heavy enough to hurt you! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/66062-new-to-me-280z/?page=5#findComment-642271 Share on other sites
dar5052 Posted July 11, 2022 Author Share #52 Posted July 11, 2022 @Patcon yes I was surprised how heavy it actually was. When it was on the stands it felt pretty Light but when 4 of us lifted it, it was a struggle. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/66062-new-to-me-280z/?page=5#findComment-642273 Share on other sites
dar5052 Posted July 17, 2022 Author Share #53 Posted July 17, 2022 (edited) Decided to go a safer route based on the content of another user on the forum, thanks for the inspiration… this gives me quite a bit of room to get under the car with a roller board. Definitely money well worth spent. I’ll be able to pressure wash and then put on my undercoat outside of the garage. dar5052 Posted August 7, 2022 Author Share #54 Posted August 7, 2022 Progress… underside is basically done. Now on to the inside/engine bay… started prepping the brake and fuel lines today. Once I have the engine bay and interior painted, I can start much more reassembly. Seriously looking forward to it… I’m tired of looking at shell. I want a rolling chassis again. 3 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/66062-new-to-me-280z/?page=5#findComment-643436 Share on other sites
dar5052 Posted August 9, 2022 Author Share #55 Posted August 9, 2022 Painted the engine bay today. Hopefully onto the interior tomorrow.... using a single stage nissan jet black. Easier than doing a base coat clear coat, particularly since its esentially areas that wont be seen much. dar5052 Posted August 11, 2022 Author Share #56 Posted August 11, 2022 Not thrilled with the interior paint but oh well. It will be covered up anyway. The paint and the POR15 seemed to have a reaction where the paint has a bunch of orange peel. dar5052 Posted November 6, 2022 Author Share #57 Posted November 6, 2022 Haven’t posted much progress but I thought this looked cool. It’s finally coming back together… once I have the car back on the ground, I’ll pull off the doors and trunk lid and start the body work. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/66062-new-to-me-280z/?page=5#findComment-647005 Share on other sites

Like you said, It will be covered with carpet and barely visable. dar5052 Posted November 7, 2022 Author Share #59 Posted November 7, 2022 Quick question, I am wanting to cover my rear shock towers and the tunnel section in diamond stitched leather. What floor carpet do I need to order to match up to this? Or do I just order regular 280z carpet and hem the edges? Popular Post dar5052 Posted August 8, 2023 Author Popular Post Share #60 Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) Haven't updated much but good progress on the car. Took a new job a couple months back so that's been hindering the progress. But at least body work is done and I can focus on assembly.
