MH77280Z Posted April 16, 2022 Share #1 Posted April 16, 2022 Hi Guys, I am speechless where the modulator is located in the 77 280z. Mine is automatic. What is the best way to get this thing out? Also, seems like this is a threaded modulator but on the other end of the modulator there is no way to tighten it? its all around all over!!! S30Driver Posted April 16, 2022 Share #2 Posted April 16, 2022 The modulator is located on the driver side, about 1/2 way along the transmissions length, down low, just above the pan. It is threaded and just unscrews from the transmission case. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/67418-77-auto-trans-modulator-installremoval/#findComment-639404 Share on other sites
MH77280Z Posted April 16, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted April 16, 2022 That part I know. How do u get it out? The exposed end is all round and there is no way any socket wrench will work. Also when u put a new one is it just hand tight? Patcon Posted April 16, 2022 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2022 Maybe a strap wrench? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/67418-77-auto-trans-modulator-installremoval/#findComment-639407 Share on other sites
MH77280Z Posted April 16, 2022 Author Share #5 Posted April 16, 2022 Yeah let me find a smaller one tomorrow. Problem is it is right next to the exhaust pipe and there is hardly any room. Also, I think it does explain possibly some smoke i sometimes see in the exhaust at starting. The vacuum hose at the manifold has transmission oil. So the modulator is definitely gone. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/67418-77-auto-trans-modulator-installremoval/#findComment-639410 Share on other sites
MH77280Z Posted April 18, 2022 Author Share #6 Posted April 18, 2022 There was a plate holding the rubber tube to the modulator. Once I took that off there was a decent clearance if not ideal. Placed a new modulator and my trans fluid somehow was at L, topped it off as well with a qrz. So far it is behaving better now at low and high rpm range in terms of shifting now. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/67418-77-auto-trans-modulator-installremoval/#findComment-639431 Share on other sites
