I have an amp meter in the car. i showed starting the car because the draw that I am having started when the problem started with me starting the car. that video was while the car was being jump started and fully at 13.9v plenty enough to start the car but I have to jiggle the keys 3-5 times to get it to actually even attempt to turn over. im assuming the events are correlated. I’ve been told starter, ignition switch, voltage regulator. Possibly bad battery/alternator. Just trying to give as much info to help narrow it down. I know it doesn’t showcase the volt draw or anything like that hoping it shows someone something though lol. I down right hate electrical and it doesn’t quite make sense to me:(. So again, testing to sort out the trouble is the best way to find the root cause. Begin by ensuring all connections are clean and tight. A starter draw test can determine if the starter has a problem. Load testing the battery can determine if there is a problem with the battery. Load testing the charging system will pinpoint any charging system issues. The multiple turns of the key looks like an ignition switch problem. The alternator and voltage regulator work together to produce charging voltage. The "black goo" might or might not be bad. Your meter will tell you if the the charging system is working. You need to learn to love electrical work. The early EFI systems are full of it. Haha that’s what I was afraid of. I have someone coming by to help get me started on understanding it all. He is going to show me how to read a wiring diagram also. I’ll text everything to make sure it’s running right. I’ll let y’all know what fixes if all. i figured the car was also having secondary issues of the ignition switch going bad too. Glad I’m at least somewhere in the right area. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/67801-280z-starts-but-has-a-massive-parasitic-draw/?page=2#findComment-644898 Share on other sites
Zed Head Posted September 4, 2022 Share #16 Posted September 4, 2022 Here are two testing manuals that will help. The 1980 book covers all of the years through 1980. The first one was written specifically for the 1975 year. Not sure of the 1980 book has any changes.
