Av8ferg Posted March 31, 2024 Author Share #14 Posted March 31, 2024 Av8ferg have you done the starter-relay mod to your Z?I have done this mod. I was burning up ignition switches pretty regularly until I added the starter relay. Great and affordable mod. Av8ferg Posted April 2, 2024 Author Share #16 Posted April 2, 2024 Anyone ever heard or bought from this starter company? Check it out and tell me what you think. They sound pretty good. I’m not buying a new starter every 18-24 months because of these Chinese remans. https://www.classiccarperformance.com/products/datsun-240z-260z-280z-high-torque-starter Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/68820-best-starter-motors-replacement/?page=2#findComment-663536 Share on other sites
Zed Head Posted April 2, 2024 Share #17 Posted April 2, 2024 Nissan started using gear reduction starters in 1978. So that's not really a new thing. If you search "britishstarters.com" on the internet you can find reviews from people that have bought them. Here's one. Kind of what I was afraid of. They don't really describe where they source their motors on their web page. https://www.mgexp.com/forum/mgb-and-gt-forum.1/british-starters-com-my-observations-your.3110642/ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/68820-best-starter-motors-replacement/?page=2#findComment-663537 Share on other sites

Was able to bang on it with a hammer and get another start of of it. I’d just get one “click” when I turned the key. This is a remanufactured (AC Delco -premium) gear reduction starter. You might take it apart and see if it's something simple like a dirty solenoid contact or sticking mechanism. Remove the solenoid and pull it off of the slug. Here's a video. Solenoid removal starts about 5:10. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/68820-best-starter-motors-replacement/?page=2#findComment-663538 Share on other sites
Yarb Posted April 2, 2024 Share #19 Posted April 2, 2024 I’ve seen this during my research awhile back. If I need to purchase one in the future Personally I’d give it a shot. Av8ferg Posted April 2, 2024 Author Share #20 Posted April 2, 2024 Thanks, that’s the second recommendation to fix this myself. While not against that, I’ve always hated this starter since the day I got it. It makes an awful noise when starting and I blame it for toasting my ignition switches. Maybe that’s not fair but I just want a reliable piece of gear. I will pay for quality and that review makes me think this is the best I can find. I will continue to search. RockAuto has one that doesn’t say Remanufactured on the listing so I’m curious. Say it’s made by WAI Global https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/nissan,1982,280zx,2.8l+l6,1209350,electrical,starter+motor,4152 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/68820-best-starter-motors-replacement/?page=2#findComment-663551 Share on other sites
Zed Head Posted April 2, 2024 Share #21 Posted April 2, 2024 (edited) There's a new option. Meaning not reman'ed. WAI Global. I don't know anything about them but the cost is less than the reman'ed BritishStarter unit. And no core required. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/nissan,1978,280z,2.8l+l6,1209260,electrical,starter+motor,4152 https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=12165009&cc=1209260&pt=4152&jsn=512 https://www.waiglobal.com/ Edit - didn't see the full post above. WAI already ID'ed. Good luck. Av8ferg Posted April 2, 2024 Author Share #22 Posted April 2, 2024 Did a little digging around about WAI Global. This is a legit new starter and the company seems to have a good reputation for quality. I bought using my America Express which doubles the manufacturers warranty. I ordered it and will report back my findings when it arrives. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/68820-best-starter-motors-replacement/?page=2#findComment-663557 Share on other sites
Patcon Posted April 2, 2024 Share #23 Posted April 2, 2024 (edited) Is a gear reduction starter available new from Nissan? Looks like the the 280zx starter is 23300-N5903. Looks like it's pretty hard to find. There is a newer part number that looks to be a reman 23300-N5903R Ferg, maybe you could find one in Japan or Europe when you travel or have another pilot look for you Edited April 2, 2024 by Patcon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/68820-best-starter-motors-replacement/?page=2#findComment-663559 Share on other sites
